Welcome to the 2025 - 2026 season of JangmiArts! In 1986, Han Jiwon was the Korean traditional dance teacher at Minneapolis' Korean Culture Camp. She agreed to teach Korean Adoptees on Saturday mornings throughout the school year and she named the group "the Chang-mi Korean Dance Troupe. Chang-mi (revised spelling now "Jang-mi", means "Rose" in Korean.)

In 1997, Jiwon asked Han G-in Brooke Newmaster) to step into the director's role and lead the group. We have evolved from a children's dance group to an all ages Music, Dance, Drumming and Arts program now called: JangmiArts. All one word Jangmi + Arts = JangmiArts. Adult Korean Adoptees, their children, Korean Internationals, Other Korean Americans and multicultural Koreans all are a part of JangmiArts. Many of us didn't grow up experiencing Korean cultural ways so let's learn and embody our Korean cultural heritage, together!

Join minhwa artist Youngmi Chang for a hands-on workshop in minhwa (Korean folk painting), designed especially for Korean adoptees and our wider community. Together, we'll learn simple minhwa techniques, explore the stories and symbolism behind traditional imagery, and create art that holds meaning of our own.

Participants will be guided step by step as they create their own minhwa-inspired artwork. All art materials will be provided. These workshops are offered as an opportunity to explore identity, culture, and belonging through art - and to create space for adoptee voices and experiences

This workshop is presented by JangmiArts & AK Connection.
Proceeds will be shared between Youngmi Chang, JangmiArts, and AK Connection.

What is Minhwa ?

Minhwa () is traditional Korean folk painting, known for its colorful imagery, symbolism, and expressive style. Often created by everyday people rather than court artists, minhwa features familiar subjects such as flowers, animals, birds, plants, and objects from daily life. Beyond their beauty, minhwa paintings often carry wishes and hopes for things like happiness, good fortune, longevity, love, and protection. Artists have traditionally used colors, symbols, and imagery to express their hopes for themselves and their families.


About Youngmi Chang

Youngmi Chang is originally from Daegu, Korea, and is currently an artist based in New Jersey. She is dedicated to sharing Korean traditional folk art through workshops, her paintings, and online painting videos. You may recognize Youngmi from the culture camps that serve our Minnesota Korean adoptee community. We're so excited to welcome her back to Minnesota to share her beautiful Minhwa with our community!








A NEW Toddler/pre-K & Parent class called "CHINGUTIME!"
will begin September 6th and will be offered twice a month.
